Should you write the book? Which book should you write? And what will it actually take to finish it?
Writing a book is a substantial commitment of time, thought, and energy. Before you start pushing yourself to produce chapters, it helps to make sure you are working on the right book and that you understand what it will take to bring it into the world.
In this three-part workshop series, we worked through those questions in order.
You can watch the replays below for a short time.
Replay access ends September 7th.
1. Is a Book Your Best Next Move?
A book can deepen your work, extend your ideas, build authority, reach people you may never meet, and become the foundation for other opportunities.
But that does not mean every good idea needs to become a book or that every expert needs to write one right now.
In this workshop, we look at the bigger question first: Is a book actually the right vehicle for what you want to do?
If the answer might be yes…
The next question is not How do I start writing?
It is Which book should I write?
Most experts have far more than one possible book inside their body of work. The challenge is deciding which idea deserves your time and attention now.
That is where the second workshop begins.
2. Which Book Is Worth Writing?
You may have years, even decades, of knowledge, research, stories, frameworks, experience, and ideas. That abundance can become a problem. When everything feels important, books become too broad. Several different books get tangled together. Or authors spend months writing before realizing they still have not made some of the most important decisions about the book itself.
This workshop is about finding the book inside your expertise that is worth developing now.
Choosing the book changes the problem.
Once you know what you are trying to create, the question becomes much more practical:
What will it take to actually write it?
Not in an imaginary week where nothing interrupts you. In your real life, alongside your work, responsibilities, clients, research, family, and everything else competing for your attention.
That brings us to the final workshop.
3. What Will It Take to Write Your Book?
Good book ideas rarely fail because their authors are incapable of writing them.
They stall for other reasons. The thinking becomes more complicated than expected. The structure refuses to cooperate. Research expands. Other responsibilities take over. The author gets stuck, loses momentum, starts questioning earlier decisions, or simply keeps pushing the book to the bottom of the list.
In this workshop, we look at what it actually takes to move from I should write this book to a completed manuscript.
You know more now. The next step is doing the work.
You may have come into these workshops asking:
Should I write a book?
Then:
Which book should I write?
And finally:
Can I realistically get this thing written?
If your answer is becoming yes, you do not have to figure out the rest of it alone.
The Book Your Work Deserves
The Book Your Work Deserves is a six-month guided program for experts who are ready to turn their knowledge and experience into a serious nonfiction book.
Beginning September 14, we will move from the decisions behind the book into the work of developing and drafting it. You will clarify the book you are actually writing, shape its structure, build a realistic path through the manuscript, and keep moving when the inevitable problems appear.
The goal is not simply to write more words. It is to shape your expertise into a book worthy of your work and complete the first draft of a book people will want to read, review, and recommend.
If these workshops have helped you see the book more clearly, this is where we continue the work.
